Recently I got an opportunity to be the photographer for an event that some of my friends put on, before this i'd never done any serious photography work yet alone gig photography and had absolutely no idea how i'd tackle it, but for some reason I said yes anyways. Here's my take away's from the whole experience.
My preparations we're honestly very little as i didn't really know what to expect, so after some short YouTube videos and a small test shoot I headed in to do some more test shots with the lighting set up at the actual venue before all the people showed up, I think just doing some form of preparations made it a lot easier even if I was really just putting my settings to what i thought was good and shooting away and once everything was underway surprise surprise no one's really looking at the photographer anyways, not really what people go to gigs for anyways right? Once everything's underway everything falls into place a little more, people tend to get out of the way when they see someone who's there to do something besides stand and dance (again who would have thought) and from there it's just taking as many photos as possible and praying some of them turn out good.
I seriously think it was great doing this, even if my end goal for my career isn't to be a photographer, this experience was still semi-paid work with a camera and is just more work that I can use not only on social media and my portfolio to show skills, those of which i definitely learned a lot of actually going out into the field and putting myself out there even though it was kinda terrifying at first, also it's opened up opportunities to work with bands and event organisers in future both of which are going to need photography and videos in the future so it was great to do some work that hopefully people will notice and contact me for in the future.
In conclusion whilst quite terrifying and the fact that really I had no idea what I was doing was just something that I had to push past and in the end I did work that i'm actually pretty proud to be sharing and hopefully will give me more opportunities in future. And it was pretty fun too
