Intermedia and the editing process

As one of my four main uni projects for the second semester Intermedia proved to be more of a challenge than I thought it would be, turns out physical installations were a lot less of my forte and something that I struggled to wrap my brain around for a long time, however for our final project I managed to get into a group and be put in a role that was much more in my area of expertise, I was tasked with editing the final product of a music video where the lyrics to the song would be generated by a computer and to which the video would interpret literally this project would then be titled Emotions From A Robot.

Video editing is something I've had to do a lot in the past two years and something I have felt relatively comfortable doing, however this year we were introduced to DaVinci resolve to use with RAW footage instead of using Premier Pro, at first I found the switch to a new program quite challenging and a bit daunting as the UI of DaVinci can sometimes be quite overwhelming. I managed to overcomes this though as with part of work on my other projects and with assisting on a third year major project as an editor, I was able to pick up DaVinci very quickly, even to the point where I don't want to scream every time I have to put something in the timeline!

So, Intermedia. I was not involved in the actual shoot that was done of the footage so my main job early on was building some sort of plan around how i wanted the video to be edited, as the video was supposed to literally interpret the lyrics of the song I went through a copy of the lyrics and wrote a rough plan of what shots I wanted associated with the lyrics

This gave me something to refer to when I was putting everything together, which ended up being a huge time saver down the line.

For the physical editing I started with the clips most strongly associated with the words, Lines such as rectangle carrot and red strawberries had clips that were very easily associated with them so were good first steps to pair up, from there I could work on filling in gaps with extra footage that I had, such as the my darling han line, which is just the protagonist in the video mouthing the lines of the music video.

At the time of writing this blog this is about as far as I've gone, my plan is to show the first rough cut to my group and get feedback, tweak the cut a bit until we are all happy and add subtitles along the bottom of the video with the lyrics to make the video a bit easier to follow especially for those attending the project who are hearing impaired or who would like to be able to read the lines as they are being said, however these should all be easy tweaks and will definitely be able to be implemented by the time we need to present the project

Overall I am happy with how it looks in the end, maybe if I had been there on the shoot days in order to have some sort of input over the footage things would have gone a bit differently but I'm happy to gain more experience about the editing process and what I was able to produce with the footage that I received. Let's see how it looks in the final presentation!
